With Meredith Viera's departure from TODAY in June, we're all in a bit of funk and wonder how we'll cope when she flies the coop.

Good thing we have some motherly advice on how to deal with separation from Meredith herself.

In this video, she talks about how she dealt with empty nest syndrome when her eldest son went away to college. After crying all the way home from California after leaving him, she waited a week for a phone call from himand was overjoyed at how happy he was. She and her husband had given him 'roots and wings,' says Meredith, and that's all a parent can do.

Meredith also talks about how she is extremely proud of all three of her kids, especially for how they've coped with their father's Multiple Sclerosis. They are "far more sensitive than they might have been otherwise," she says.

She believes the key to a good relationship with your kids is by having a sense of humor and always keeping a dialogue open with them.

Be available 24-7, Meredith says. "You never know when there will be a conversation they want to have."
