When Marquise Goodwin dropped to his knees following an 83-yard touchdown Sunday night, San Francisco 49ers fans had no idea the true emotions behind that moment.
Goodwin wasn't simply celebrating an amazing move.
As the wide receiver explained following the game, that play, which helped lead to the 49ers to their first win of the season, came hours after he suffered a devastating loss.
Just months earlier, Goodwin and his wife, Morgan, revealed they were expecting a child. But he shared a heartbreaking update Sunday night.
"I just wanna thank those who’ve genuinely prayed for (Morgan) & myself through out this pregnancy," he wrote. "Unfortunately we lost our baby boy due to some complications, and had to prematurely deliver him early this morning around 4am."
The message was accompanied by a black-and-white photo of the newborn's hand resting on his fingertip.
"Although we are hurt, I am grateful for the experience and grateful that God blessed me with a wife as courageous and resilient as Morgan," the former Olympian continued. "The pain (physically, mentally, & emotionally) that she has endured is unbelievable."
In a post of her own, his wife shared that same gratitude and unwavering faith in the wake of their loss.
"This was truly and an amazing experience and it was also a tragic experience," she wrote. "But that’s okay because we won’t stop fighting and we won’t give up on what God has in store for us. It’s just important for us to remember that things happen for a reason, even though we may question ourselves 'why us.' Our faith is strong."
She also cheered her husband's big play in the face-off against the New York Giants, because she knew exactly who he was playing for.
"Despite our loss, my hubby kept grinding, scored his son a touchdown & got our first 'W' of the season."
Goodwin asked his fans to pray for his family.
