Did you have a babymoon? Why some couples swear by a pre-baby vacation

For couples with a wee one on the way, a new trend has them packing -- for a getaway.

In the vein of push presents (a gift given to the mom-to-be for her, um, laboring efforts) and dadchelor parties (a male-bonding celebration for the dad-to-be for, um, being the dad), a babymoon is a vacation a couple takes just before they’re going to have the baby. It’s a chance for some one-on-one time before that adorable third party joins the mix.

Benee and Mike have been married for 3 years and are expecting a baby girl in late August.  But with both of them working and weekends filled with birthing classes, prenatal yoga and getting the nursery ready, the two haven’t had much time for pre-baby bonding, they told TODAY.

So Mike planned a babymoon to the Turks and Caicos, a place Benee describes as “magical and amazing.”

The trip, Benee says, lived up to its billing.

“This for me was just all about relaxing…and taking a few moments for myself. Kind of recharge my batteries,” she says.

“Because we know, come the end of August, when the baby comes, it’s going to be a rollercoaster ride,” adds Mike.

While on their babymoon, the couple spent time relaxing on the beach and talked about a number of important things they hadn’t had time to discuss, such as baby names, and whether they were going to get a nanny or use daycare. To be able to have the discussions in such a beautiful setting took some of the pressure off, Benee says.

“So now we’re ready for the home stretch,” Mike says.

Adds Benee: “We’re ready to meet our daughter.”

Check out the TODAY video for some suggestions on babymoon destinations: In addition to Turks & Caicos, Kate Maxwell from Conde Nast Traveler suggests St. Thomas, Sedona, Az., and Las Vegas (yes, sin city can actually be fun for a pregnant lady, too). But it's not about spending big bucks -- a camping getaway or even a weekend in the next town over can be a welcome chance to reconnect with your partner before baby makes three.
