The LA Times recently reported that Disney was pulling the plug on “princess movies,” the popular franchise of fairy-tale heroines that stretches from Snow White and Sleeping Beauty to Ariel and Jasmine.

But it turns out that reports of the Disney princesses’ deaths were greatly exaggerated (perhaps the only thing they have in common with Mark Twain).

Disney jumped to correct the record – or backtrack, perhaps – and promised that princesses are “alive and well.”

“We have a number of projects in development,” an executive wrote on Disney’s Facebook page.

But the news and the retraction got us thinking. Would we really miss Disney princesses? Some moms worry about the someday-my-prince-will-come messages embedded in these fairy tales. (It’s worth noting that soon-to-be princess Kate Middleton found her prince by going to college… maybe that’ll be the plot of the next Disney movie?)

What do you think about the whole pink-sparkly Disney princess phenomenon?
