The "Kick-Start Your Life" series on TODAY with Marlo Thomas is aimed at helping women get un-stuck and move on with the next phase of their lives. Here, Tracy Shapiro talks about her struggles looking for a new career after 13 years as a stay-at-home mom.
I am a 39-year-old mom to five children. I have twin boys age 13, a daughter age 11, and two younger boys ages 8 and 7. I have been a stay-at-home mom since my twins were born, and I got divorced two years ago. Prior to having my children I had a great job in the business field, but gave it up to start a family and never looked back. I have worked hard to create a new home that is comfortable and filled with love. I feel very blessed to have healthy, happy children who have adjusted well to all the changes in their lives. Even though I have been very successful as a mom, and know I was always meant to raise children, I still feel like something is missing. I would like to have something of my own.
I thought I was happy for a long time, but as it turns out the path I was on was not meant to be forever. I never imagined being where I am today. I am smart and well educated, but have felt I am at a disadvantage applying for a job. I have been randomly applying for jobs with no real direction, and have felt very alone and helpless during this process. I know I can be successful in the business world again, like I was before kids, but finding that confident woman inside me has been a challenge.
Meeting Carol Fishman Cohen of iRelaunch.com through the TODAY show has brought new-found energy for me to this process. She has given me sound advice, and has been extremely helpful in leading me through the steps to re-launch my career. I am feeling more confident that I can do this, and am very optimistic about the future!
