Former “Bachelor” star Vienna Girardi announced she suffered a miscarriage, losing both of the twin daughters she was carrying.

Girardi, 31, said she had gone in for an ultrasound on Aug. 3, because her maternal-fetal specialist noticed one of the babies had more amniotic fluid than the other. That was the the first sign of a twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, a condition “when one twin takes more nutrients than the other,” she said in a Facebook post over the weekend.

“They said that it did look like it had improved over the last week though,” she wrote. “Unfortunately, that was not the case and that evening my water broke due to the amniotic sacs rupturing. I spent the next 2 days in the hospital trying everything to save them.”

Girardi announced in June that she and her race car driver fiancé, Todd Allen, were expecting twins through an ultrasound photo she posted on Instagram.

She later revealed details about her high-risk pregnancy, saying her twins were “monochorionic diamniotic,” which meant they shared a placenta and could end up competing for nutrients.

In her Facebook post Sunday, Girardi discussed the trauma she endured just before she miscarried.

“The doctors had warned me that if I did not go into labor and deliver the babies, I was taking the chance of risking my own life and causing an infection in my uterus but they could not survive at only 18 weeks,” she wrote.

“My little angels went to Heaven on Aug 5th and I was rushed into the OR for emergency surgery and was in the ICU for 4 days.”

Girardi said she donated the twins to science after a doctor approached her about the idea and explained how it could help scientists to learn more about twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome and hopefully save other expectant mothers from similar heartbreak.

“This was the hardest decision I have ever had to make in my life but I knew my little girls were in Heaven already and the pain I feel I would never want any mother to ever feel,” she said.

Girardi was previously engaged to Bachelor Jake Pavelka, after winning his final rose on season 14 of the dating show in March 2010. The couple split a few months later, and Girardi later dated former "Bachelorette" contestant Kasey Kahl. Last August, she got engaged to race care driver Todd Allen, her boyfriend of three years.
