Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi says her latest film "Love for Life" is a major step forward for China, in that it deals with the sensitive issue of AIDS in the country.

Zhang was on hand Wednesday to present the Gu Changwei movie, which also stars Hong Kong heartthrob Aaron Kwok, at the Rome Film Festival.

Zhang, of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" fame, said "Love for Life" shows there's a new attitude in China that signals "we have opened a little bit, because we are facing this topic, we are facing this issue, and people are not hiding this anymore."

The film is about a small Chinese village where many people are infected with HIV because of an illicit trade in blood.

"Love for Life" is one of 15 films in competition at the festival, which ends Nov. 4.
