Can’t decide which fall trends to go for first? Here are the pieces and styles that will move you effortlessly from trend to fabulous trend. Are you ready? Judy Gordon, “Today” style editor and creator of, takes a look at what to wear and how to wear it.

SLIP INTO YOUR time capsule, set the dial on “Way Back,” and take a wild ride into the mod, mod world of retro ‘60s fashion. But for 2003, you’ll want to look modern, not like a Warhol wannabe born a few decades too late. Take a minimalist approach to the mod trend by slipping on a mini skirt or a sleek jumper — a super streamlined style that looks just as appealing forty-some-odd years later. Look for A-line shapes in two-tone combinations of black (or white) plus a bright. Nifty details like circle pockets or prominent bright zippers are a trend plus. Layer your jumper over a bright turtleneck - and don’t forget your opaque tights and groovy boots!

Skirts are one of the key statement makers for Fall 2003. No longer content to be the silent partner to a suit, this season’s skirts are full of style and personality. Get ready to channel your inner vixen, flirt and cheerleader! Snap up a pleated mini with leather buckles paired with a ribbed turtleneck or go for a solid-colored, wear everywhere version. Even the classic, slim, knee-length skirt gets a makeover. What’s in store? Sexy ’80s-inspired pencil skirts or flirtatious styles with a surprise finish in the form of ruffles or pleats at the hem. These “flippy” skirts and pencils styles are an instant update that work well with everything from ladylike jackets to day-into-evening suit separates.

Complete the feminine story with high heels or boots, gloves and a mock croc bag — very luxe!

Pants play a pivotal role this fall —from men’s wear to leaner cuts to the new dark denim — the right choice makes all the difference. Chic trousers are a must for anyone who wishes to embrace the men’s wear trend. What’s key is a relaxed, easy elegance that can only come from a well-tailored pair of pants.

Luckily, the casualness of this look means you can add a pair or two to your wardrobe and mix them with everything you own. Best bets are a flat-front pair in a brown gab or tweed, plus a pleated pair in a black pinstripe or herringbone. Add a men’s wear jacket, then feminine touches like a bright silk blouse or a soft-colored corset. Other options include ’80s-inspired skinny pants or leggings but only those with goddess-given perfect proportions should go for the short jacket/skinny pant duo. Those of us with more earthly shapes will appreciate the cover of a longer jacket or sweater.

This season, ladylike looks rule. Chanel-inspired jackets can be paired with matching skirts or dark denim jeans, along with loads of pearls. Suit jackets are shorter and more fitted, then mixed with feminine tops ranging from corsets and camis to silk blouses. Skirt lengths skim the knees, wide fishnets decorate the legs and high-heel pumps (round-toe, pointy or peeky-toed) give a polished look. Carrying a structured handbag or clutch is a must!

The biker or moto-cross look is a got to have it look for urban girls. Ultra hipsters can choose from cropped, short leather jackets in silver or black — paired with mini’s or skinny pants. The more subdued can opt for knee-length leather coats with biker details such as silver snaps. For those who just want a touch of the trend, satchel-type handbags with chains, buckles or grommets do the trick.
