Welcome back! Meredith Vieira returns to TODAY as guest anchor all week

It was another welcome reunion in Studio 1A Monday as former TODAY anchor Meredith Vieira kicked off her weeklong stint filling in for Savannah Guthrie.

Meredith Vieira is back as a co-anchor on TODAY, and she came prepared.

"I have two drinks here,'' she said on Monday. "One is coffee, one is moonshine. That'll get me through the week, I hope."

"Nothing has changed,'' Matt Lauer replied.

Meredith follows last week's guest anchor, Katie Couric, in filling in this week for Savannah Guthrie, who is on maternity leave.

And her return got the big screen treatment; part of Monday's show was broadcast on Times Square's Jumbotron, including the debut of the new TODAY app, which launches in celebration of our show's 65th anniversary.

Vieira was a co-anchor with Lauer on TODAY from 2006 to 2011, and it felt like she never left as the two zinged each other just like it was the old days.

"This has been a long time in the making,'' Lauer said. "I think we finally satisfied your agent's demands. We have the masseuse, we've got the male dancers, and yes, we managed to get your picture up on the huge screen in Times Square. So everything OK?"

"It can never be big enough,'' she replied.

She then appeared to get sentimental about Lauer's 20th anniversary on TODAY, which he celebrated last week.

"I was watching the piece about you and the career and literally my eyes filled with tears because you've gotten so old,'' she said. "I don't know what happened."

"Now you know what we're in for this whole week,'' Lauer said.
