U.S. prosecutors on Monday filed court papers to send a former "Survivor" television producer to Mexico to stand trial for the killing of his wife.

The extradition request for Bruce Beresford-Redman, filed in a federal court in Los Angeles, comes less than three months after police arrested him at his southern California home.

Shortly after his wife's death last April, Mexican authorities seized Beresford-Redman's passport and ordered him to stay in Mexico while they investigated. But he returned to the United States and later declared himself innocent.

No hearing dates have been set in the extradition request to face a charge of aggravated homicide, but prosecutors said the process could take a year or more.

Mexican authorities accuse Beresford-Redman of strangling his Brazilian wife Monica in the Caribbean resort city of Cancun while the couple was on vacation with their two children in an effort to repair their marriage.

Statements of witnesses detailed in the court papers indicate the couple's relationship was strained by his infidelity. Beresford-Redman admitted to Mexican investigators that he had an affair with a casting director in 2009.

The court papers include some of his e-mails to the woman, whom he called his "little wing."

The court documents also say police found blood spots in the couple's room, and that an examination of Burgos' body, which was found at a sewage tank at the resort, shows she was strangled.

In May, a Mexican judge issued an arrest warrant for Beresford-Redman, which eventually led to U.S. authorities arresting him and filing Monday's extradition request.

Steven Jaffe, a spokesman for Beresford-Redman's attorneys, said they had not received the formal extradition papers and could not comment until they did receive the documents.

"Survivor" was one of the first reality TV competition shows to gain massive popularity when it came out in 2000. Beresford-Redman is listed as a producer or senior producer on dozens of episodes between 2002 and 2004.
