The family of Tamir Rice said they are looking for “justice” and change to arise from the 12-year-old’s fatal shooting by a Cleveland police officer.

A police officer fatally shot Tamir on Nov. 22 outside of a Cleveland recreation center. The officers told investigators that they believed the boy had been grabbing for a firearm, which was later discovered to be a toy pellet gun.

Samaria and Tajai Rice joined TODAY’s Lester Holt to discuss Tamir’s death and the protests against police shootings that have swept the U.S.

"I'm looking for justice for my son and a change for the nation," Samaria told TODAY. She admitted it was “overwhelming” to speak in front of thousands of demonstrators at a protest in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, but said she is “blessed” to have the world supporting her.

"That's what's keeping me going," she added.
