Statement from Marriott Hotels & Resorts

A representative from Marriott Hotels & Resorts releases a statement on the safety of their pools in response to a TODAY investigation.

Marriott strongly supports the intent and requirements of the new Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act. As soon as the law was enacted, we immediately began a company-wide program to make any necessary modifications to our hotel pools.

In pursuing an aggressive compliance plan, we have faced many of the same challenges confronted by others throughout the hospitality industry, namely, delays in receiving necessary parts from suppliers, (as acknowledged by the Consumer Product Safety Commission), and confusion among local authorities regarding permitting procedures and unclear health department regulations. Despite these difficulties, most of our pools are in compliance with the act.

At the time of airing, all three pools at the hotels brought to our attention by TODAY had either completed or commenced their retrofit program.

Marriott has established very strict standards of cleanliness and safety for all hotels that either meet or exceed public health department regulations.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission did not mandate that pools be closed while awaiting modifications. The safety and security of our guests is always a top priority at Marriott and we do everything we can to provide a safe and enjoyable pool environment for our hotel guests.
