Spring fashion trends: Opposites attract

Stacy London of TLC's “What Not To Wear”  shows how to choose from all the spring fashion trends, from flats to heels, skinny jeans to wide-leg pants.
/ Source: TODAY

This season it seems that everything on the opposite ends of the spectrum are in style from flats to super high heels, from skinny jeans to wide leg trousers.

Of course, if you try to wear every trend you'll be on the fashion faux pas list so it's really about choosing the right trend for your body.

Stacy London, TODAY fashion expert and co-host of TLC's “What Not To Wear,” suggests what TO wear when both ends of the fashion spectrum are on the racks.

Don't get confused. For every trend you're going to see an "equal and opposite" fashion partner. You really have to pay attention to your own age, body type, lifestyle and workplace to figure out which of the trends is really appropriate for you.

Remember, you can't wear it all together. You have to pick one! Choose the trend that works for you and not against you. Whatever you choose, you'll still be trendy and show off your own personal style with great freedom!

THE MINI DRESS VS. THE MAXI DRESS
MINI:
Dresses are a huge trend. There's no rule on lengths this season, you'll see tons of varying lengths... So if you have great legs and it's appropriate for you to wear a mini then this is the dress for you. I personally think that if you're 35 or above, it's inappropriate to wear a mini dress especially to the workplace.

DRESS: MILLY - $450

SHOES: ALDO - $60

JEWELRY: DINOSAUR DESIGNS - DARK GRAY TURQUOISE RING

A.V. MAX - PINK DROP EARRINGS

MAXI:
Lots of the maxi length dresses are coming in halters, spaghetti straps, etc. The emphasis is on the top half and can help hide a heavier waistline. Now, if you're 5'4" or below a maxi dress may overwhelm you. Most maxi dresses are more for a weekend casual evening out and not quite tailored enough to wear to the workplace.

DRESS: FOREVER 21 $40

SHOES: BANANA REPUBLIC $128

JEWELRY: A.V. MAX - LONG NECKLACE; BLACK & FUCHSIA EARRINGS; CORAL FLOWER RING

BAG: SUSAN FARBER COLLECTIONS - PINK CLUTCH WITH BOW

FLATS VS. SUPER HIGH HEELS:
FLATS:
You're going to see all kinds of shoes in the stores the flats have never been flatter and the heels have never been higher. For the woman who claims she can't wear heels, if that woman exists, flats are coming in a variety of colors and styles. Flats look great with shorts, ankle pants and even for the evening. You don't need a heel for sophistication.

SHOES: STEVE BY STEVE MADDEN -- $190

JEWELRY: A.V. MAX -- TURQUOISE EARRINGS

HEELS: The way to wear the super high heels is either as a platform or as a wedge so you don't break your ankles. The extra weight on the heel also helps you balance and believe it or not a chunkier shoe also helps balance out a heavier calf.

BRIGHT COLORED DRESSES VS. NUDE COLORED:
BRIGHTS: Primary colors are in! Think crayola and the strong reds, blues, greens, yellows. You have to remember your skin tone matters and your age matters! You really don't want to wear these colors if you have pinkish skin tone, if you're over 55 or if you're under 5"4 because you'll look like a crayon.

DRESS: CYNTHIA STEFFE -- $350

SHOES: NINE WEST -- $89

JEWELRY: A.V. MAX -- PALE YELLOW EARRINGS

SARAH ERIGGS -- BLUE STONE WITH GOLD NECKLACE

NUDES: Everything i just said about the brights now no longer apply. For all those who shouldn't wear the brights, nudes is just as in right now. Tone on tone is one of the most sophisticated palates in fashion if you do it right.

DRESS: CLUB MONACO -- $149

SHOES: ALDO -- $195

JEWELRY: A.V. MAX -- GOLD & BRONZE BANGLES

SKINNY PANTS VS. WIDE LEG TROUSERS:
SKINNY: If you have too much thigh, you can't wear skinny jeans. If you do brave skinny jeans, work it so that you balance the body line. Since you have skinny on the bottom balance the top with something big. Go with the opposites have something big and then something narrower.
