Jason Lockhart, son of former Atlanta Braves player Keith Lockhart, has come home after 21 days in the hospital following a freak baseball injury that left him on life support.
The 15-year-old was released from Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta on Sunday after undergoing seven surgeries in three weeks to repair a torn artery in his face.
His father took to Twitter to announce the good news.
Jason’s sister, Sydney, who has been posting updates on the boy's condition to social media, posted a cheerful video and photo showing her brother smiling as he walked out of the hospital with a bandage over his nose.
Sydney thanked the team at Scottish Rite as well as the public for their thoughts and prayers.
"Sweet Jason is headed home! We (and all of you) have prayed so relentlessly for this day and it's finally here," she wrote in the Facebook post.
"Y'all, we are so so thankful," she added.
The family's harrowing ordeal began on June 17 when Jason was struck in the face by a baseball during a tournament, breaking his nose.
Excessive bleeding in the following days caused concern, and a CT scan later revealed the teen had a torn artery.
He was hospitalized and put on life support to prevent him from moving and aggravating the injury.
While the boy still has a lot of healing to do, his family said they had positive feelings about his steady recovery.
“How wonderful it feels to all be under the same roof...” Sydney wrote. “We are now praying that Jason’s body continues to recover and fully heal without any more bumps along the way.”
Jason's dad played for 10 seasons in the major leagues, mostly for the Atlanta Braves. He's currently a scout for the Chicago Cubs.
On social media Monday, he received several messages of support from fans in the baseball community.
"Glad to hear about Jason's return home," one organization wrote. "From all the MLB scouting community. Take it slow young man."
