Knowing that Beth Adelson, press secretary for Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, closely monitors her boss's Twitter feed, her boyfriend of five years asked the senator for a little help crafting a marriage proposal in 140 characters or less.

On Thursday, Brett Wanamaker tweeted to Warner, asking for a favor.

Warner yielded the (Twitter) floor to Wanamaker, leading to this sequence.

Wanamaker didn’t even have a Twitter account until he created one on Thursday for the purpose of the marriage proposal. So when she saw the tweet from his new account directed to both her and Warner, Adelson didn’t know what to think .

When a bewildered Adelson stepped out the door of her office, she found Wanamaker down on one knee with a ring and flowers before happily accepting.

Warner then made sure to update his constituents.

Wanamaker has sent only those two tweets -- but he made them count.

“I imagine their vows will be in 140 characters or less,’’ Al Roker joked when the anchors discussed the story on TODAY Friday.
