Puerto Rico's dominant brewer is seeking a piece of the island's premium beer market.
The company that makes the popular Medalla brand says it has created a new premium lager called Magna Special Craft. Cervecera de Puerto Rico said in a statement Monday it invested $100 million to produce the beer with technology from Germany and hops from the Czech Republic. It is being produced at the brewery in the western city of Mayaguez and was expected to hit stores this week.
Spokeswoman Vannessa Valiente says the company is not exporting the beer but won't rule it out for the future. Cervecera dominates the island's $850 million beer market. Heineken reigns in the premium category.
