British singer Pete Doherty has been charged with possessing heroin and released on bail, police said on Tuesday, just a day after he was fined for drunk driving.

The 30-year-old Babyshambles frontman appeared in court on Monday in Gloucester, western England, on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and escaped jail.

But after admitting careless and drunk driving following a gig in the city in June, he was banned from driving for 18 months and fined $3,300.

Police officers then immediately escorted him from the court to the police station across the road and charged him with the drugs offense.

Police said he had been charged with possession of heroin and was released on bail to appear in court on Jan. 27.

Doherty, who once dated supermodel Kate Moss, has a history of drug and driving offenses and was jailed in 2008 for breaching the terms of his probation.
