This is sad news for Olivia Wilde: The gorgeous "Tron: Legacy" actress and her Italian royal husband, Tao Ruspoli, have decided to separate after eight years of marriage, Wilde's rep confirms to E! News.

Though we imagine her many male fans — and potential ox-strangler Megan Fox — might characterize this turn of events as ... hopeful.

So what happened?

MORE: Wilde does good deeds too!

A source told People that the couple had reportedly been living separately for some time now and had tried to work it out, but in the end, decided to call it quits.

Wilde, 26, met Ruspoli, 35, when she was just 18 years old. Six months after meeting, the two eloped in Virginia, though they later had a real wedding. Ruspoli is an L.A.-based filmmaker and documentarian. His family owns the Palazzo Ruspoli in Rome and a castle in Vignanello, Italy.

Wilde's name had popped up on the short list of actresses rumored to be in talks to play Superman's Lois Lane, and she's currently taking on the role of Justin Timberlake's mother — yes, mother! — in the upcoming sci-fi thriller "Now."
