The 14th annual Maine International Film Festival is kicking off in Waterville.

The festival runs from Friday through July 24 with screenings of nearly 100 independent, international and Maine-made films at the Railroad Square Cinema and Colby College.

The festival also provides opportunities for audiences to meet and talk with directors, writers, producers and others people working behind the scenes.

This year's winner of the festival's Mid-Life Achievement Award is actor Malcolm McDowell, who has appeared in more than 100 films and is perhaps best-known for the starring role as the psychopathic villain Alex DeLarge in "A Clockwork Orange." McDowell will accept his award Saturday.
