Los Angeles International Airport is getting a $118 million makeover.

Airport commissioners on Monday awarded a contract to spruce up the Central Terminal Area.

Plans include roadway improvements, custom-made light poles with LED lighting, metallic silver canopies for Terminals 3 and 4, and a programmable light band to provide passengers with light shows and video graphics.

Officials want to improve traffic flow and develop an architectural theme for one of the world's busiest airports.

Los Angeles World Airports Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey says right now, LAX is nine unrelated terminals "connected by a traffic jam."

Construction begins this spring.

It's part of a multibillion-dollar improvement program for LAX that included renovating the Tom Bradley International Terminal. It reopened last year with new restaurants and boutiques.
