The only thing more exciting in figure skating than watching Yulia Lipnitskaya’s Gumby-like moves is seeing Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir comment on the ice-capades. The duo, Olympians-turned-NBC Sports Olympics commentators, have a chemistry that’s undeniable. They’ve been racking up fans, and have even created @TaraandJohnny Instagram and Twitter accounts to share behind-the-scenes and off-air goings-on.
The pair, who are so close they share dressing rooms and even take naps together, say their friendship really kicked into a high gear about a year ago when they started working together.
“The skating community is really small, so we knew each other, but we didn’t really spend much time together,” Lipinski told TODAY.com. “When we started working with each other, we just knew instantly that we clicked.”
The fierce fashionistas said one of the first things that brought them together was their fabulous style – and their love of handbags.
“We bonded over all things glamorous, especially handbags, we’re both obsessed — Hermes, Birkins, you name it,” Weir, who was rocking a fur coat, leather pants, Louboutin shoes and a statement ring, told TODAY.com. “We’re both skaters-turned-commentators and lovers of everything fabulous.”
But when asked what really makes their off-air friendship so solid, they both said that trusting each other and being able to be vulnerable took their relationship to BFF status.
“I generally don’t trust people — the figure skating world isn’t really filled with the most trustworthy of people, so I’m usually guarded,” Weir said. “But it’s very different with Tara.”
Lipinski agreed. “I love that he’s just really honest, and sometimes, especially when you’re in the media, you don’t always have that with someone you work with,” she said. “I can be myself with him and we just have so much fun together."
Lipinski and Weir spent most of the interview giggling and poking fun at each other, a testament to the fact that they are much more than just colleagues. Both admitted they even get a little jealous when they see each other hanging out with other friends.
“We have very few boundaries,” Lipinski joked. “And we can communicate with just a look, I don’t even have to say anything, he can just look at me and know what I’m feeling.”
