E. & J. Gallo Winery is expanding in California's central coast with the purchase of San Luis Obispo County's Edna Valley Vineyard.

Modesto-based Gallo says it has agreed to pay an undisclosed price to Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines Co. and Paragon Vineyard Co., which have held Edna Valley in a joint venture. The purchase includes 62 acres of vineyard.

Gallo will continue to partner with Paragon as a source of grapes for the Edna Valley Vineyard wines.

The Modesto Bee says the sale continues Gallo's move into premium wines from coastal regions of California. Gallo has built or acquired wineries in Napa, Sonoma and Santa Barbara counties.

Edna Valley Vineyard produces a range of wines, specializing in chardonnay.
