First lady Michelle Obama says community service helped President Barack Obama get where he is today. Mrs. Obama spoke to young Americans who are in Washington building a house for a Texas family that lost their home to a hurricane.

She talked about the president's past service as a community organizer in Chicago. She also told them about her own work with a community service project in Chicago.

She told these students from the YouthBuild programs that what they are doing is just the beginning and they can call upon the relationships they are building now as they move through life.

Mrs. Obama also visited some exhibits on solar electricity, rooftop gardening and learned how carpet is made.
