Javier Fernández has the opportunity to make history by becoming the first figure skater from Spain to win an Olympic medal.

"This is my moment," he told TODAY's Natalie Morales Thursday on TODAY.

Life on the ice comes natural to the 21-year-old: He fell in love with skating when he was six, after following his sister.

"When I was on the ice, I never wanted to go off," he said.

Fernández has "grown a lot as a skater" since his last appearance in the 2010 Vancouver games, where he placed 14th. These games, he said, are different for him.

"I'm fighting to be on the podium, to be on the top," he said.
