The single mom who ditched her job as a waitress to become a full-time Duchess Kate impersonator said her life just got a bit bumpier.
Heidi Agan, a 32-year-old dead ringer for the expectant Duchess of Cambridge, has invested in several fake belly bumps to make herself look pregnant.
“I went to my seamstress and asked her, ‘Can you make me pregnant? But I still need to move and interact with people,’” Agan told TODAY.com.
What resulted were several “bumps” made from a foam-like material that can bend and easily be thrown into a suitcase.
Despite being five months pregnant, the slim Duchess of Cambridge barely shows much of a baby bump. She is expecting her first child with Prince William in July.
Agan, who currently wears her smallest bump when she goes out on official appearances, said she’s been surprised by the stir created by her attempt to look as similar as possible to Kate.
“Some people have said it’s creepy. I understand that. This is what I do for a living. It’s important for me. This is the same as if she got a new haircut. When she got the bangs cut, I had to do that,” she said. “There’s not point in me being a lookalike if I don’t look alike. And as she gets more and more pregnant, there would be point in me going out being normal. If I’m hired by a client, they want me to be as authentic as possible.”
Agan began her career as a celebrity impersonator in February 2011, quitting her waitressing job at a hamburger restaurant after customers repeatedly noted her resemblance to the famous royal. Working for the agency Susan Scott Lookalikes, she now earns nearly $1,000 for every official appearance.
Although the new job requires her to travel across the world, Agan said the gig has actually allowed her to spend more time with her two children, ages four and 11.
“Over the summer, if I was quiet, I could say, ‘Come on guys. Get in the car — we’re going to the beach!’ And I’ve never been able to do that before,” she said. “So the time I do get to stay home with my children and make memories with them has been absolutely wonderful.”
Agan said both of her children love the stories she returns home with.
“My son and daughter love it because they wake up and say, ‘Where you are going today, Mum?’ It’s been fun for the whole family. We all enjoy this job,” she said.
Agan has worked hard to duplicate Kate’s mannerisms and to capture the exact look of the duchess. She has even spent some of her earnings replicating Kate’s designer wardrobe, including the royal blue Issa dress Kate wore when she and William announced their engagement, and a copy of her Alexander McQueen evening wedding gown.
“Sometimes people get a bit freaked out by my job and think I’m trying to be something I’m not. When I do appearances I’m Kate, and when I come home I’m Heidi,” she said. “It’s meant to be a bit of fun. It’s not meant to be serious. It’s meant to be humorous, to add humor to a corporate event or to a photo shoot.”
Agan said she feels very fortunate for her current career.
“This job has turned out to be fun and just life changing and wonderful,” she said. “I am incredibly blessed.”
