Critics a-Twitter over Meghan McCain's racy pic

Here are two things that apparently don't mix: being the daughter of a former Republican presidential candidate, and wearing a tank top.

At least that's what seemed to be the consensus when Meghan McCain, 24, garnered a heap of criticism after she posted a picture of herself Wednesday night on Twitter.

"So I took a fun picture not thinking anything about what I was wearing but apparently anything other than a pantsuit [and] I am a slut," she wrote.

In the photo, McCain, daughter of U.S. Sen. John McCain, is wearing a dark tank top while holding up an Andy Warhol biography to the camera. Her top is revealing, and she's wearing a coy smile.

What followed was a firestorm from critics.

"You don't have to pull cheap gags like this to get attention. Leave this to the Paris Hiltons of the world," one of the milder rebukes went. "You knew you were posting a nearly NSFW photo, so don't pretend like you're surprised at people's reaction."

McCain seemed baffled by the attention to her outfit.

"Seriously I was just trying to be funny with the book and that I'm a dork staying in," she wrote, later adding, "when I am alone in my apartment, I wear tank tops and sweat pants, I had no idea this makes me a 'slut,' I can't even tell you how hurt I am."

She became so rattled by the comments, she wrote, that she even entertained the idea of signing off of Twitter forever.

"Ok I am getting the f--- off twitter, promise not to delete my account until I sleep on it, thank you for the nice words supporters," she wrote Wednesday night.

But the social-media devotee's hackles weren't up for long. About an hour later, she wrote: "I do want to apologize to anyone that was offended by my twitpic, I have clearly made a huge mistake and am sorry 2 those that are offended."
