Scott Pelley will be the new anchor for the "CBS Evening News," CBS said on Tuesday.

Pelley, a Texas native who most recently has been part of the CBS "60 Minutes" team, replaces Katie Couric, who confirmed last month that she was stepping down as the anchor.

Pelley's appointment as anchor and managing editor will take effect June 6, CBS said in a statement.

An award-winning broadcaster, Pelley has been with CBS more than two decades in a variety of roles, including coverage of the White House and Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
