U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has returned to active duty, but his attorney believes he is looking toward life after the military.
Matt Lauer asked Eugene Fidell, the freed soldier's lead counsel in the Army's investigation of the circumstances surrounding his capture by the Taliban in 2009, if Bergdahl is looking to stay in the military or ultimately get out.
"I think he's ready for the next chapter,'' Fidell said on TODAY Thursday, after noting that Bergdahl is proud to be serving his country again.
An Army investigator is expected to question Bergdahl about the circumstances that led to his disappearance and capture by the Taliban in 2009. Bergdahl could face a court martial on charges of desertion or going AWOL.
Fidell does not believe the Army opened the investigation because of public pressure. "I really don't,'' he said. "Obviously, there are a number of narratives that are competing for attention. Part of it is consternation among some people about the release of anyone from Guantanamo. There are people who are really invested in that issue, and they would like to make Sgt. Bergdahl's case a sort of punching bag because of that concern."
