Best bets: ‘Idol,’ ‘Dancing’ to crown winners

TVAnd your new "American Idol" is...who? Crystal Bowersox has been the favorite almost all along, but so was Adam Lambert last year, and Kris Allen beat him out for the title. Lee Dewyze has a good shot of doing the same this year. They'll offer up their final performances Tuesday, and the winner will be announced — undoubtedly after loads of filler — Wednesday. And your new "American Idol" is...who? Crystal Bowersox has been the favorite almost all along, but so was Adam Lambert last year, and Kris Allen beat him out for the title. Lee Dewyze has a good shot of doing the same this year. They'll offer up their final performances Tuesday, and the winner will be announced — undoubtedly after loads of filler — Wednesday. (Final performance show, May 25, 8 p.m., Fox; final results show, May 26, 8 p.m.)

The other big finale this week is "Dancing With the Stars." It's no real surprise that Evan Lysacek, Nicole Scherzinger and Erin Andrews are in the final three — they've shown the most skill and talent since day one. Who will take home the ugliest trophy in existence — the gloriously tacky mirror ball? We're picking Nicole, but Evan has a good shot, too. (Final performance show, May 24, 8 p.m., ABC; final results show, May 25, 9 p.m.)

And as those two reality shows end, a new one springs to life. Ali Fedotowsky is the woman who left "The Bachelor" so she wouldn't lose her job at Facebook. She's now left that job anyway, and will lead the next version of "The Bachelorette." As those who watched her on "The Bachelor" know, she's spirited and fun and should make for a lively season. (May 24, 9 p.m., ABC.)

Movies

When we last left the "Sex and the City" women, their lives were in pretty good shape. (Um, spoilers ahead?) Carrie and Big were wed, Charlotte had two daughters, Miranda and Steve had reconciled, and Samantha was turning 50 back in her beloved New York. So did the film really need a sequel? What can they possibly do for an encore? We're not sure, but all four main characters are back for "Sex and the City 2," part of which was shot in Morocco (standing in for Abu Dhabi). Start mixing the Cosmos and slip into your highest-heeled Manolos, it's time to get girly again. (Opens May 28.)

Is "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" the first action movie to utilize parkour? Not sure, but the founders of the physical discipline, which involves using the outdoors as a sort of obstacle course, were on the set coaching stars, including lead actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Gyllenhaal's looking pretty buff as Prince Darstan, a street urchin turned hero who apparently saves the world by acquiring an ancient dagger that could start a world-killing sandstorm. We don't make 'em up, folks. (Opens May 25.)

DVD

"The Road"
might be one of those movies that's better watched on DVD than in the theater. The Cormac McCarthy novel was incredible, but it's tough to imagine saying to a group of friends looking for a night out "Hey! Let's go see a movie about cannibalism and despair in post-apocalyptic America!" With the DVD though, depress your heart out. Viggo Mortenson stars as the man dragging his son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) down South in hopes of a brighter life, with "brighter" being a very relative term in their world. (Out on DVD May 25.)

Books

Fans of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and its sequel, "The Girl Who Played With Fire" have had May 25 marked on their calendars for some time. That's the date that the third and final novel in Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy, "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest," comes out in the U.S. Sure, Swedish and British copies have been available for some time, but for those who didn't pick one of those up, you can now catch up on Lisbeth Salander, Mikael Blomkvist and their often terrifying adventures. (Published in the U.S. May 25)
