Beijing has made history. By nabbing the hosting rights to the 2022 Winter Olympics, the city became the first to be awarded both a summer and winter games.

The International Olympics Committee voted Thursday to give the games to Beijing, which edged out Almaty, Kazakhstan for the right.

Beijing also hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics, giving the world a grand opening ceremony and overall experience that many TODAY reviewers recalled fondly.
