“Today” is pleased to announce that our eighth annual holiday toy and gift drive is now underway. Last holiday season, we shipped $5.3 million worth of toys, books, games, clothing, electronics and so many other items from our generous partners to more than 350,000 children. These children — from infants to 18 year-olds — are reached through more than 120 non-profit organizations around the country.

THE UNIQUE drive, which provides gifts for children and teenagers across the country, who might not otherwise receive any, officially begins Monday, November 26 and will continue every day through Sunday, December 23.

Because of the devastating attacks on New York and Washington, it’s being reported that about 15,000 more children are expected to be in need of special services this holiday season in those cities.

We are also pledged to continue our support to the many organizations throughout the United States that we’ve helped in the past. Reports say that because of the recent tragedies, these groups are being overlooked by charitable givers. We want to be able to serve them this year as well.

Your contributions will be much appreciated this holiday season. Please join us in helping make the holidays brighter for so many children, and please keep in mind that we’re especially in need of items for children ages 13 and up.

You can purchase gifts online through Amazon.com/Today. (See link below.) Those gifts will be sent to various non-profit organizations around the country.

THE RECIPIENTS: Gifts will go to more than 120 children’s service organizations serving more than 350,000 children nationwide, from Florida to Alaska. The organizations include: homeless shelters, domestic abuse shelters, schools, afterschool programs, day care programs, children’s hospitals, developmentally disabled preschools, youth centers, native American reservations, victims services, career training programs, local organizations that help parents in need and many other service organizations.

WHEN: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26 THROUGH SUNDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2001.

If you’re in Rockefeller Plaza this holiday season, be sure to visit us and bring a new, unwrapped toy or gift in its unopened, original package. We need gifts for children from babies up to age 18, and we have a tremendous need for boys’ items as well as older teen gifts. Also, we’d prefer gifts other than stuffed toys since our corporate donors supply a sufficient number for our needs.

We’ll be collecting every day on the air at 8:30 a.m. ET from November 26th until December 23rd outside Studio 1A.

OUR GOAL: To serve all of the children’s organizations we have served in the past, with hopes to add new organizations to our growing list. The success of the toy drive is a reflection of the tremendous generosity of our “Today” show viewers and their desire to help those who are less fortunate. The holiday gift program is just one of the many undertakings in which we hope to help others.
