As beautiful as many cities around the world may be, filled with historic architecture and charming streets, part of any travel experience are the the locals. They're the people you call on when you're lost or looking for a neighborhood bar or trying to find out where the nearest taxi stand is. Some cities are filled with people who are only too happy to stop and chat while others are inhabited by people who are too caught up in the fast pace of city life.

As part of their annual World's Best survey, Travel + Leisure asked its readers to help identify the friendliest cities around the world. Some of the cities might surprise you, as they aren't necessarily top of the mind when planning a getaway.

Coming in at No. 1 is Galway, Ireland. In fact, three Irish cities made it into Travel + Leisure's top 10, indicating there's something more than luck accounting for the Emerald Isle's charm.

Moving stateside, Charleston, South Carolina, comes in at No. 2. With it's Southern charm, the city's got an instant friendly vibe.

Others on the list include Key West, New Orleans, Nashville, Santa Fe and Savannah. And if you're looking to cross international borders on your next adventure, you might want to consider visiting the cities of Kyoto, Reykajik,Cuzco or Lisbon. Just about every part of the world is represented in Travel + Leisure's, meaning you're sure to find a friendly city for you.
