True Belibers broke a Twitter record last week in honor of Justin Bieber's 18th birthday — retweeting "Setting a record for @justinbieber!" 322,224 times by 9 p.m. on the teen idol's special day, March 1. But on Saturday, Lady Gaga's Little Monsters proved she still owns the microblogging network, as her Twitter account rolled over to 20M followers— the most ever ... so far.
Justin Bieber, meanwhile, isn't so far behind, with 18 million followers — maybe more in the very near future if the Bieber Army starts actively recruiting to beat those Little Monsters. Twitter history shows those tweenage girls are driven. His Twitter horde will break records when so asked, and l at least threaten to break you, should you insult, or even caress lovingly, a single perfect hair on their leader's head.
That Bieber Army does love to tweet — last year it was reported Bieber fans take up 3 percent of Twitter's servers. But as Mashable points out, twittercounter.com statistics show "Gaga’s daily Twitter growth rate is consistently higher than Bieber’s — keeping her lead safe."
Gaga rose to the Twitter top spot in 2010 when she passed Britney Spears for most followers. Spears, who isn't nearly as active on social media as Gaga, holds steady these days with 13.5M followers — trailing behind Katy Perry at No. 3 (15.7M followers), Shakira at No. 4 (with 14.5M followers) and Rihanna at No. 5 (14.4M followers).
Can you believe it? Just three years ago, Oprah Winfrey and just about everyone else made such a big deal about Ashton Kutcher beating CNN to a million Twitter followers. What a tiny, insignificant number that seems now.
These days Kutcher, (https://twitter.com/#!/aplusk) clocks in at less than a quarter of that number with approximately 9.7M followers. Meanwhile, Demi Moore, still under the Twitter handle @mrskutcher, has around 4.8M, for what it's worth — which isn't much, considering she hasn't tweeted since Jan. 7.
Meanwhile, Gaga isn't done conquering social media. Along with her Twitter lead, her 48.8M fans on Facebook, and 830,000 circles on Google+, Gaga just unveiled her Little Monsters social network — you know, for fans who are sick of getting distracted by anything that isn't about Lady Gaga. Which lately, isn't much.
