Two weeks ago, a photographer was taking pictures of Dubai's skyline from atop the Liberty House building when his iPhone slipped from his hand. Not only did the phone survive the 42-story plunge; it recorded the whole thing.

Of course, that incident was a fluke; even the most expensive phones aren’t designed to survive a 42-story drop. To see just how big a fall a smartphone can survive, Rossen Reports took a Samsung Galaxy, a BlackBerry and an iPhone 6 in silicone cases to the Astoria building in Houston. There they dropped the phones from various heights — and what happened surprised even technology expert Jim Stickley.
