Facebook's newlyweds: Watch out!

Sixty-one percent of female Facebook users have been married for less than a year, compared to 38.2 percent of the site's male users, and judging from recent reports about the social networking site's impact on personal lives, couples who want the honeymoon to continue should make sure they keep friending their spouse as much as their virtual buddies.Ad Age put together a nifty graphic on the demo

Sixty-one percent of female Facebook users have been married for less than a year, compared to 38.2 percent of the site's male users, and judging from recent reports about the social networking site's impact on personal lives, couples who want the honeymoon to continue should make sure they keep friending their spouse as much as their virtual buddies.

Ad Age put together a nifty graphic on the demographics of social media. Among the male/female differences when it comes to Facebook, based on user profiles:

  • 86.5 percent of female Facebook users list "cats" as an interest, compared to 13.5 percent of the site's male users.
  • 71.1 percent of women on Facebook say they are parents, compared to 28.9 percent of men.
  • 69.3 percent of women list cooking as an interest; 30.7 percent of men do.
  • 60.6 percent of women list football as an interest; 39.4 percent of men have that one down.
  • Men apparently rule in the baseball area, with 55 percent listing it as an interest, compared to 45 percent of women.

Women are the majority of Twitter users at 54.6 percent, Ad Age said, citing findings from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. While Pew found that about 8 percent of American adults who use the Internet are Twitter users, Ad Age said Twitter is reaching just under 10 percent, still "far less than other social sites."

The top countries on Facebook are the United States, with an estimated 155 million of Facebook's 600 million-plus users, followed by Indonesia, with 36.6 million and the United Kingdom with 29.8 million.

The U.S. is also the top country on LinkedIn, the social networking site for professionals, with 46.7 million users, followed by India, with 9.6 million and the U.K. with 6.3 million.

We're not sure what to make of the Facebook female feline-football fans — other than try saying it five times really fast for a Facebook tongue-twister.
