While the now-retired Concorde once made it possible to cross the Atlantic in just three hours, trips between New York and London currently take closer to seven.
But if a patent from Airbus is any indication, it may soon take less time than ever before to zip between the major international hubs.
The US Patent and Trademark Office recently gave Airbus the OK on a patent for an "ultra-rapid air vehicle." The nearly hypersonic jet would be able to travel more than four times the speed of sound and shave that New-York-to-London trek down to just one hour.
The Mach 4+ vehicle would feature two turbojets and a hydrogen propulsion system to make it all possible, and according to the patent, would "substantially [reduce] the noise emitted when the sound barrier is broken."
But don't start planning your zippy transatlantic trips yet! It's all just the stuff of patented plans for now. There's no word yet on when or if Airbus will actually put it the plans into production.
