So you want to make your life better today and take some steps to try to live a little longer while you're at it? Well, that's really not so hard to do. As with most things in life, the best changes are the simple ones ... the ones you really have some control over ... (and some you may  not). Here are five things you can do to get started:

1. Get married.

Did you know that this hallowed institution is better for some of us than others? Married men live, on average, 10 years longer that non-married men. Being married also boosts a man's immune system. As for whether that works as well for women? Well, we don't seem to fare as well.

2. Don't accept depression as a normal way of life.

Fight it. Depression can actually hurt your immune system and can put you at risk for a whole host of illnesses. In fact, people with depression are 29 percent more likely to die of heart disease.

3. Don't smoke.

It's just so stupid. Cigarettes are the only thing that when used as directed will kill you. Almost 500,000 Americans die every year because of smoking. And if that figure doesn't scare you, consider this: More deaths are caused by tobacco than deaths from alcohol, motor vehicle accidents, suicide, murder, drug use and AIDS combined.

4. Get a pet.

I'm serious. Having a pet lowers stress and is good for your immune system. People who own pets report being happier and it will get you out of the house. Walking your dog is exercise and chances are you may meet a friend on the street.

5. Run away from home.

Make the decision that your time is the most valuable in the world. Whether you sneak away for the weekend with your girlfriends or take a bath with a "DO NOT DISTURB" sign on the bathroom door for 15 minutes, it doesn't matter. Just do something for yourself. It's good for your brain, your soul and your health.
