Hiccups are annoying. The involuntary spasms of the diaphragm not only affect adults, but kids also get them — and even babies in utero can be felt hiccuping. There are many causes, including eating too fast, consuming spicy food or drinking carbonated beverages or alcohol. But sometimes they start for no clear reason. Hiccups can last a few minutes, hours, days or, in rare cases, even months. Severe hiccups can cause weight loss, dehydration, fatigue and even death. 

While most hiccups aren't that serious, once you've got them, you really want them to stop. Now.
