Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson, who is pregnant with her second child, announced on Sunday that she's tested positive for COVID-19.
Johnson, 29, already mom to daughter Drew, born in late 2019, wrote on Instagram stories that she's concerned about her diagnosis because she's had asthma her entire life "so this scares me a little extra." In addition, research shows that pregnancy can increase the risk of severe illness due to the coronavirus.
"Not going to lie... I'm nervous knowing I'm positive. It's been a long two weeks of (respiratory syncytial virus) with Drew and now this... my body is just exhausted," the gold medalist wrote, referencing a common infection among babies that her daughter had.
"I don't want to get my family sick," Johnson added.
She went on to explain that her worries stem from watching a close family member "fight for his life last month while battling Covid so it's a serious topic of concern/hits home in our household."
Her symptoms so far include "cough, terrible sore throat, and headache. Fatigue for sure but.... that's pregnancy haha."
"Not looking for any kind of (pity) party," she continued. "Just a reminder to take care of yourself. Drink an extra water tonight and wash your hands :)"
In a follow-up post, the soon-to-be mom of two added that she's "praying so hard for all of those babies out there tonight (sappy mama here) and everyone fighting for their health."
"Ok... this emotional mess of a human is going to try to sleep now. Love you all," she concluded.
Her husband, Andrew East, 29, a former professional football player, showed his support for his sick wife on his Instagram story.
"Pray for her health and the health of the little bean and for everyone else struggling with sickness or illness," East wrote. He also asked fans to share their stories of how they've been positively affected by Johnson's work over the past few years.
Johnson and East, who got engaged in 2015 and married the following year, announced they were expecting their second child in mid-January.
"Here we go again," she captioned her announcement photo on Instagram.
"2 under 2... we are going to need ALL of the tips we can get haha," she joked in a follow-up post.
