I stumbled upon this oddity in lower Manhattan -- a fancy McDonald's. Yes, really. There's a piano player upstairs, the staff wears saucy hats and uniforms, and the ketchup packets are laid out in a fancy desi--, er, well... they're laid out, okay?
Indeed, the Travel Channel did feature this McDonald's location as part of a list of most unique McDonald’s in the world -- but according to an employee at the upscale-ish location, that was then, and this is now. Apparently, the McDonald's location was quite different before 9/11, when it boasted a doorman, a hostess and even a McDonald's boutique that sold T-shirts and other super-sized paraphernalia. They've since cut back on many of their distinguishing luxuries. But irony is still (burger?) king at this fast food location, where there is a mezzanine available for rent to large groups and a live pianist twiddling away on a baby grand. Sounds like a pretty happy meal.
Perhaps they’ll take the next step and offer weddings, like this McDonald’s in Hong Kong.
