Pi Day (otherwise known as March 14 — or 3/14) is nearly upon us. So how did TODAY celebrate the upcoming occasion? With a pie free-for-all on the plaza!

It was all for a good cause: TODAY sent a shout-out to viewers on Facebook and Instagram Thursday, asking for them to send in pie photos using #PiTODAY. The idea was to rack up 314 of the pics in 24 hours, and in response the show would donate $5,000 to FIRST, a nonprofit that inspires kids to pursue careers in math, science, tech and engineering with hands-on robotics challenges.

Fans happily responded: TODAY received more than 500 delicious pie pics!

What could make it even better? Some plaza pie play, of course. The anchors suited up in raincoats and goggles and prepared to get plastered with cream pies tossed by Carson Daly and special guest Meredith Vieira.

But things went awry, in the best, most-inevitable way possible.

Vieira's aim wasn't always true from a distance, so she marched right up to the wall where the anchors had placed their faces and landed them at arm's length. And then she landed one on Daly!

After that, it was anyone's game and the pies went a-flyin'.

It's a big celebration for a big day. As many may remember from math class, 3.14 isn't the end of pi (a mathematical constant that refers to the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter). Pi carries out to thousands of more decimal points, but is usually approximated as 3.1415.

This year, for the one and only time this century, we'll have 3/14/15 as our pi date. (And if you want to go full geek with the numbers, 3.1415926 carries it a little further, so watch your clocks at 9:26 a.m. on Saturday!)

Or you can just enjoy the pie play. Even without a special date in March, there's never a bad day to celebrate pie!
