Taco Bell's new burrito with spicy popping candy is explosive

Taco Bell's latest burrito is quite literally a Firecracker.

Taco Bell certainly isn't afraid of launching menu items that pack a seriously flavor-packed punch, but their latest burrito is quite the firecracker.

While the Cap’n Crunch Bites or the Doritos Locos Tacos were fun food adventures, the new Firecracker Burrito has many across social media scratching their heads.

It comes in two varieties (cheesy or spicy), and is stuffed with rice, nacho cheese, sour cream, beef, and red tortilla strips. The fillings are then wrapped up in a firecracker red tortilla and, if you opt for the spicy version, they’ll add a dose of chipotle sauce. But that’s not the feature blowing our minds — for an additional twenty cents, you can get a packet of spicy “Cayenne Popping Crystals” added to your burrito.

What the what? According to Reddit user Elbore, who reportedly tried the new item last week, the sprinkles "taste sweet and crackle just like pop rocks [sic]."

Others who have tried the burrito describe the item as boasting an “explosive, fizzy texture." But is it appetizing? The jury is out.

Elbore remarked being "very confused by the whole thing," while Foodbeast advises would-be tasters to "be warned: too many of these popping candies at once could make the burrito taste way too sweet, which, as I've learned the hard way, is not a pleasant feeling."

While only available at a few locations for a limited time, Twitter is already having fun with the explosive food concept.

Popping candy-mashup foods seem to be having a moment right now. Oreo released their own Firework cookie (albeit not spicy) just a few months ago.

Before we get too excited, these Firecracker burritos, which cost just $1.49, are not yet available at all Taco Bell locations. They are currently being tested at four California stores through Aug. 16.
