It's no wonder that fans of "Mamma Mia!" and "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" danced in their seats and sang along while watching the musical and movies that are based on ABBA's catchy songs.
But there's also another way for enthusiasts to be a part of the action: at a "Mamma Mia!"-themed dinner theater!
The brainchild of Björn Ulvaeus, an original member of ABBA, "Mamma Mia! The Party" is an immersive theatrical dining experience that's set within a restaurant called Nikos' Taverna that's located on a Greek island. Attendees get to watch a show, participate at times and eat!
"Mamma Mia! The Party" started in Stockholm and has sold out since its opening in January of 2016. On Sunday, Ulvaeus announced that a second location will open in London in the spring of 2019.
Ulvaeus said he came up with the idea for "Mamma Mia! The Party" after watching people at the musical become so involved in the show. "What if this could continue somewhere else?" he said. The idea for an immersive experience was born.
The set for the dinner theater includes a courtyard with a fountain, olive trees and pretty foliage, called bougainvillea. Guests sit at tables covered in blue-and-white checked tablecloths and get to eat Mediterranean food and drink wine as the story of Nikos and his family is performed. If the mood strikes them, attendees can participate by getting up and dancing to the catchy ABBA tunes.
The experience in London is set to open in spring 2019 at The O2, a music and entertainment venue that regularly hosts major concerts and events. Tickets will go on sale in the fall of 2018, though there is no word yet on the price of admission. Tickets for the Stockholm experience range between $150 to $250 per person.
