Renting movies might seem like a thing of the past, but there is one last vestige of this dying tradition: the very last Blockbuster in America.
The only remaining Blockbuster location is hanging on in Bend, Oregon, a town in the Pacific Northwest known for, among other things, its beer scene and so-called Ale Trail.
The Blockbuster is a popular selfie spot to prove that the video rental store does, indeed, still exist. There's even a documentary about it in the works.
As a tribute to this Blockbuster’s last stand, a Bend-based brewery called 10 Barrel has decided to create a dedicated brew, which will debut at a launch party on Sept. 21 at the Blockbuster located at 211 NE Revere Avenue.
At the party, guests will be able to sample the new beer, enjoy some food (we’re thinking popcorn and Junior Mints) and catch some classic flicks.
"The Last Blockbuster" brew promises to "deliver you back to a time when cracking open that blue and white VHS case was the sound of an epic Saturday evening," according to the brewery's Facebook page.
A spokesperson for 10 Barrel told TODAY Food via email that the beer is made with the company's Sinistor Black Ale that has nuances of red licorice (perfect for Red Vine fans!) and that it "pairs perfectly with buttery theater popcorn and your favorite movie-sized chocolate."
"The 10 Barrel team is always up for a fun time, so when we found out that the Blockbuster store right here in Bend was one of the last few remaining in the country, we immediately thought to team up with them to brew something special," Chris Cox, co-founder of 10 Barrel Brewing, told TODAY. "Blockbuster is a cultural icon, and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate over three decades of movie fandom with them."
For those who can't make it to the Blockbuster bash, the beer will also be available at any of 10 Barrel's pub locations, which are located in Bend, Portland; Boise, Idaho, San Diego and Denver.
10 Barrel told TODAY that the brew is a limited edition and will be hanging around as long as supplies last, but they have not yet settled on a price point.
However, if opening up a bottle of it feels as satisfying as opening up that VHS case, it's priceless.
