The behind-the-scenes action at "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" started well before the venerable late-night program moved back to New York from Los Angeles. Fallon's old home at "Late Night" — Studio 6B in Rockefeller Center — needed a makeover, and a new time-lapse video captures the process in just one minute.

The fast-paced clip shows workers buzzing about and building out the space in time for the Feb. 17 debut of the new "Tonight Show." The curtain opens at the end and Fallon steps out for his show debut.

Studio 6B was where Johnny Carson and Jack Paar both hosted the show before it moved to L.A. in 1972. The renovation allowed for a larger seating capacity than when the studio housed "Late Night."

During construction, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Fallon said there was talk of annexing the floor above 6B, knocking through the ceiling, and installing balcony seating. But the idea was nixed, because Fallon said he didn't love the idea of a balcony for TV. "People in the balcony can’t see the rest of the audience underneath the balcony, and it’s weird to play to," he told VF. "It’s not as easy to run into the audience and run back out onto the stage, which is what I like to do."

In his fifth week as host, Fallon continued to show viewership gains, according to NBC. The show was up 25 percent for the week of March 17-21 compared to the same week last year, with 4.4 million viewers.

"The Tonight Show" airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on NBC.
