'Voice' coach Adam Levine hears it from fans over new blond 'do

For “Voice” coach Adam Levine, life's a bleach. In a bombshell selfie posted to Twitter Saturday, the Maroon 5 frontman revealed that he's lightened his locks from chocolate brown to platinum blond (and shaved down the sides to boot).

The Miley-meets-Billy Idol-meets-Draco Malfoy look garnered mixed reactions from fans. Some lamented that People magazine’s reigning Sexiest Man Alive should have left his mane alone.

Others lent their support, assuring Levine that he looks great with (or despite) the bold new 'do.

People StyleWatch tracked down Levine's hairstylist Shaul Arbiv to find out what prompted the sudden makeover. “With summer months coming up, we wanted to do something totally drastic and different from his previous styles, so we bleached it," Arbiv told People. “I have been working with Adam for a long time, and he likes to change up his style often."

On TODAY Monday, Hoda Kotb and guest co-host Billy Bush broadcast live from the "Voice" set. Bush asked members of the studio audience to applaud if they believe Levine is sexier as a blond. The reaction? Almost total silence. "I have to say I like Adam better as brunette," Kotb admitted.

Judging by her cuddly appearance in the selfie, Levine's fianceé, model Behati Prinsloo, doesn't mind the dye job. And besides, Levine says he's not trying to win any beauty contests.

Who knows? Perhaps he'll surprise us with an even wilder look when Maroon 5 plays the TODAY Plaza Sept. 1.
