The star of the new TNT drama "Murder in the First" became the talk of the 140 character-universe by following seemingly random people in huge spurts. And it got people wondering if Taye really cared or if there was some other force at work.

The 43-year-old explained to Matt Lauer on TODAY Friday that he's "embarassed" by his own Twitter follow push.

"Everyone was telling me I needed to have more of a presence on Twitter. So I met with this dude who deals in social networks and he said instead of focusing on always disseminating information, why don't you focus on using it as a ticker?" Taye said. "So I gave him a bunch of people that I was interested in, from athletes to people in politics, just a whole bunch of people. And then he started following people for me. And now whenever I want, I can just look at my phone and just hear what's going on with all these people."

So now you have permission to tell your friends bragging about the fact that Taye Diggs followed them on Twitter that they're really not so special.

Diggs folows 45,509 people as of Friday, and Matt asked if he was aiming for the 50,000 mark. "I'm just trying to keep myself stimulated," he said.

Taye also shared some of the insights he gained from researching his role as a homicide detective on "Murder in the First."

"I was pretty taken aback, because we ate with some of these officers in San Francisco, because the show takes place in San Francisco, and to look at them you think they were regular people," he said. "But then to hear some of their stories, it's amazing how these people can have lives and families and relationships."

The show premieres on June 9th on TNT. Hopefully Taye will follow you by then so you can tweet with him during the episode.
