Not cool: James Franco trash-talks Anne Hathaway

We always thought James Franco was a cool guy, but is there anything less cool than trashing a friend behind her back? During a visit to Howard Stern's radio show on Monday, Franco refused to defend his Oscar co-host Anne Hathaway against the haters, and also managed to throw some shade at his pal Lindsay Lohan. Say what you will about Anne and Lilo, but did Franco really have to go there?

The conversation about Hathaway began when Stern brought up the 2011 Oscars. At first, Franco half-heartedly protested, saying that Hathaway "does not want me talking about this." But he actually agreed when Stern criticized Hathaway for being an overdramatic "goody two-shoes."

"I'm not an expert on—I guess they're called 'Hatha-haters,'" Franco joked. "But I think that's maybe what triggers it."

Though Franco stated that "Anne and I made up" after their widely criticized Oscar gig, he also said that that they "haven't talked in a while."

We're guessing that they won't be talking for a long while after this interview. As you may recall, Franco seemed near-catatonic at the Oscars, while Anne went in the opposite direction, cranking everything up to 11. It didn't make either of them look good, but most critics gave points to Hathaway for at least trying. Would it kill Franco to give her some credit?

And yes, it seems like everyone has been drinking the Hathaway hater-ade lately. But we didn't expect Oscar nominee James Franco to stoop to that level. Speaking of which—James also took the bait when asked if he'd really turned down sex with Lindsay Lohan in 2011.

"I don't want to, like, brag about it," said Franco, in the most backhanded brag ever. "I don't know how that got out."

“She was having issues even then, so you feel weird," he continued. "Honestly, she was a friend. I’ve met a lot of people that are troubled and sometimes you don’t want to do that."

That's fair. Maybe it was even kind of noble at the time. But boasting about it now just makes Lohan look desperate and kind of pathetic—and she was doing a fine job of that already.

Probably, Franco was just trying to be extremely honest on Stern's radio show. But there's a difference between being candid and being hurtful. Celebrities get to choose what they reveal in interviews, and as far as we're concerned, Franco made some very poor choices.
