Madeleine's disappearance gained widespread media attention when she first went missing in early May.  Looking at the photographs of four-year-old Madeleine is heartbreaking, and it is hard to imagine her parents would ever harm her.  That said, the disappearance sparked a debate about whether her parents were irresponsible leaving their three children home alone that night.  Similar to the story last week of an Ohio mother who left her toddler in the backseat of her car resulting in the child's death, the question is have these parents suffered enough in their loss without the public scrutiny and finger-pointing?

Of course, it's hard to imagine any parent could hurt a child and unfortunately we have seen that happen time and time again.  The implications of the McCann parents as suspects, if they are innocent, are devastating as they try to create normalcy for their two-year-old twins back at home in England.

If they are, in fact, guilty, it is equally devastating for their other children who would be placed in foster care.  The McCann case has sparked dialogue nationwide and overseas.  The broken family returned home for the first time and were accosted by media.

Should they be allowed to adjust in peace and quiet?  Could they be covering up an accidental death with a performance of searching for Madeleine?  Where is Madeleine's body and is there still a chance that she is alive?

Unfortunately this story gets harder to hear as more facts come to light, and one can only hope the two-year-old twins will be able to have a safe and loving home to grow up in- and very few memories of the past four months.
