This morning, Al's subconscious got the best of him. After months of backstage teasing – he calls her everything from "Sesquahanna" to "Shawanda" – Al slipped and actually referred to her as "Samantha" on air without realizing his mistake.
He's not the first to do it. "So many people have called me Samantha on the air that I actually started answering to it," Savannah told TODAY.com last month. Her former MSNBC co-host Chuck Todd jokingly said, "[Savannah] is a made-up name. She claims it's not, but who's named Savannah in their 30s?" And even Brian Williams has accidentally called her Samantha on camera.
During our chat in September, she explained why she's named Savannah (no, it's not an homage to Savannah, Georgia, where, ironically, she's never actually been). Off-camera, she laughed about Al calling her the wrong name. But he had never, until this morning, done it on air.
